Born in Cartago in 1882, he studied in Italy at the Academy of fine Arts of Carrara and the Instituto of Fine Arts in Rome. He was the first Costa Rican sculptor to exhibit in salons such as the Palacio de Bellas Artes de Roma, where he took first place with his work, El caminante.
